Born in Toronto in 1961, Peter Jones received his BA (Honours History-Politics)
from Trent University, his MA (War Studies) from the Royal Military College of Canada. He
has recently submitted his PhD Thesis (War Studies) at King's College, London and will defend
in the autumn of 1995. Mr. Jones is the inaugural Project Leader of the Middle East Regional
Security Project at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). He is also
contributor to SIPRI's Asia-Pacific Security Project, particularly on maritime security affairs in
the Asia-Pacific region. From 1992-1995 Mr. Jones held the position of Regional Security
Officer in the Nonproliferation, Arms Control and Disarmament Division of the Canadian
Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. He was Desk Officer in charge of
Canada's facilitation of Maritime CBMs within the Arms Control and Regional Security Working
Group of the Middle East Peace Process. He was also responsible for the arms control and
disarmament aspects of Canada's regional security policy in the Asia-Pacific and Latin American
Regions. Finally, Mr. Jones was Desk Officer for the UN Conventional Arms Register. Prior
to this assignment, Mr. Jones spent three years as the Desk Office for Open Skies and was a
member of the Canadian delegation to all three Open Skies Conferences. He has also served on
Canada's delegation to the United Nations on arms control and security matters. Prior to his
assignments in the Department of Department of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jones worked for Canadian
Department of national Defence as an analyst in the Directorates of Nuclear and Arms Control
Policy and Strategic Policy Planning. Mr. Jones is a Senior Research Fellow of the Canadian
Institute of Strategic Studies and Associate Editor of Peacekeeping and International Relations.
He has published widely on arms control, security affairs and peacekeeping.
